There have been several allegations in recent months of apps utilizing users’ microphones and cameras without their knowledge or agreement. This has prompted severe privacy issues, as it implies that apps may be listening in on private conversations or capturing films without users’ knowledge.

To protect their privacy, consumers should be cautious of app flaws. Here are some techniques for determining whether a given app has access to the microphone or camera and whether it is currently using them in the background.

For Android users

1. Launch the Settings app on your Android phone or tablet.

2. To access Apps & Notifications, scroll down.

3. Find and select the app you wish to check.

4. Click permission to see permissions that were granted.

5. To find out which apps have access, look for Microphone or Camera in the list of permissions.

To see if an Android app is currently utilizing your microphone or camera:

1. To open the notification panel, swipe down from the top of your screen.

2. Look for icons for the camera or microphone in the status bar.

3. To find out which app is using your microphone or camera, tap the corresponding icon.

For iPhone users

1. On your iPhone, open the Settings app.

2. Scroll down and click the Privacy

3. Choose microphone or Camera to see which apps have access to these features.

4. To disable access to any app, simply toggle the switch to the left.

To see if an app is now accessing your iPhone’s microphone or camera, follow these steps:

1. Take note of your screen’s status bar.

2. An orange dot denotes microphone use, whereas a green dot indicates camera use.

3. You can also launch the Control Center by swiping downward from the top right corner of the screen, which will show you which apps are using your microphone and camera right now.
