As an action-packed tournament comes to a close, England and Pakistan will meet in an enticing T20 World Cup final this weekend.
On Thursday, Jos Buttler’s side booked their place in the Melbourne final by annihilating a hapless India, blasting their way to the 169 target without losing a wicket. In the final, England will face Pakistan, whom they recently defeated 4-3 in a seven-match warm-up series. Pakistan advanced to the finals by defeating New Zealand by seven wickets on Wednesday.
After defeating India, who were joint pre-tournament favorites with England, Buttler’s team now enters the final. The last time England won the T20 World Cup was in 2010.
In fact, Pakistan’s World Cup appeared to be over when they were eliminated by India in heartbreaking fashion at the MCG and then lost to Zimbabwe in their second game. But they made it to the final, thanks in large part to the Netherlands’ victory over South Africa, and will now return to Melbourne after a memorable night at the SCG.
When will Pakistan's match against England?
Pakistan will face England in the T20 World Cup final on Sunday, November 13.The match will begin at 7 p.m. local time. The final, which will be a rematch of the 1992 50-over final, in which Pakistan’s ‘cornered tigers’ defeated Graham Gooch’s side, will be played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground for the second time.
Moreover, while England is attempting to win its first World Cup since 2010, Pakistan last did so in 2009.
What will happen if it rains?
Cricket’s long-standing wet weather rules may be rewritten in order to prevent the blockbuster Twenty20 World Cup final from being rained out. The main event is scheduled for Sunday, but rain is expected at the MCG. The tournament rules state that in such a case, a backup date is set to save the fixture and avoid forcing England and Pakistan to share the trophy.
However, it is also expected to rain on the backup date of Monday 14 November, so the ICC has taken drastic measures to move the start time to a time when it is less likely to rain in Melbourne.
A minimum of 10 overs are required per team to constitute a match, as opposed to the group stage, where only five overs per side were required to complete a game. With up to 25mm of rain expected in Melbourne on Sunday, when a resurgent Pakistan takes on England in front of more than 90,000 fans at the MCG, this could be difficult.
If the final is rained out, the ICC has designated Monday as a reserve day, with play beginning at 3 p.m. and continuing where it left off on Sunday.
